Commentary

The Po retains gas potential, domestic supply is needed and the government has eased some restrictions on gas production. However, the attempt to annul the Rockhopper award, a rising tax take and slow permitting continue to deter investment. Outlook: Neutral.

Description

The Po Basin Province of northern Italy and the northern Adriatic Sea lay on the north-western edge of the Gondwanan (African) continental plate in pre-Hercynian time until the assembly of Pangea. Most hydrocarbons in the province belong to the Porto Garibaldi biogenic gas system, generated in Pliocene–Pleistocene (and minor Miocene) siliciclastic turbidites deposited in the Apennine foredeep. Two further thermal petroleum systems, with Triassic (Meride/Riva di Solto) and Miocene (Marnoso Arenacea) source rocks, contribute oil and thermal gas reserves (nearly 1bn boe). The major time of thermal hydrocarbon expulsion was Late Neogene, during the Alpine and Apennine orogenies. Local Mesozoic oil expulsion from Triassic rocks also occurred, but those oils either were not trapped or leaked from faulty traps through time.

Summary

While underexplored, the governmental issues are likely to hamper any continued widespread development in the basin.
