Commentary

Nicaragua's country view is Negative: the Ortega–Murillo regime has entrenched authoritarian rule and faces widening US sanctions, which in April 2026 reached the Vice Minister of Energy and Mines and individuals involved in seizing US-owned property, raising expropriation risk for foreign investors. The province is onshore, has no demonstrated petroleum system or assessed resources, and the better historical prospects lie offshore on the Nicaragua Rise, so nothing at basin level offsets the country risk. Outlook: Negative.

Description

The Middle America Province (USGS Province 6113) is one of the geologic provinces defined by the USGS in its 2004 map of the Caribbean region (Open-File Report 97-470-K) and is treated here as an onshore province led by Nicaragua. Onshore Nicaragua lies on the Caribbean Plate above the Middle America subduction zone, where the Cocos Plate moves north-eastwards beneath the Caribbean Plate. More than half of the country is covered by young, flat-lying volcanic rocks overlying older metamorphic and crystalline basement, which is exposed in the north; a chain of historically active volcanoes runs parallel to the Pacific coast in the south-west, and the Caribbean coastal plain is built of a thick sequence of continental and marine sandstone, shale and limestone. A narrow sedimentary basin runs along the Pacific coast. No petroleum system has been demonstrated in the province and the USGS has not published resource volumes for it.

Summary

An onshore frontier with no oil or gas production and no USGS-assessed resources, and Nicaragua has no domestic hydrocarbon production. Exploration in both the Pacific and Caribbean areas dates back decades: several wells drilled in the narrow Pacific coastal basin were unsuccessful, and the best prospects lie offshore in the carbonate and clastic rocks of the Nicaragua Rise, outside the province. No current licensing round, seismic programme or well was found in this review. In April 2026 the US Treasury sanctioned Nicaragua's Vice Minister of Energy and Mines, together with individuals involved in seizing US-owned property, further deterring foreign upstream investment.
