Commentary

Honduras's country view is Neutral: President Nasry Asfura took office in January 2026 with a more business-friendly agenda, and the government has revived the 2013 offshore contract, with Talos Energy as operator and 3D seismic scheduled off Gracias a Dios. That activity lies in the Caribbean offshore, however, and does not reach this onshore crystalline province, which has no demonstrated petroleum system or assessed resources. The province extends into northern Nicaragua, where authoritarian entrenchment and US sanctions raise risk, but the basin is Honduras-led and the Nicaraguan part is equally unprospective, so the spillover is limited. Outlook: Neutral.

Chiapas Massif-Nuclear Central America

Description

The Chiapas Massif–Nuclear Central America province (USGS Province 6122), defined in the USGS geologic provinces of the Caribbean region, covers the continental crystalline core of northern Central America. It is dominated by the Chortís Block, which lies south of the Motagua–Polochic fault system marking the North America–Caribbean plate boundary and is the only continental constituent of the Caribbean Plate; its main Precambrian, Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks crop out in Honduras and northern Nicaragua. The basement comprises Grenville-age (c. 1 Ga) orthogneisses and low-grade Paleozoic metamorphic rocks such as the Cacaguapa Schist, with Jurassic metasediments east of the Guayape fault system. These are overlain by the clastic Honduras Group, including the Middle Jurassic Agua Fría Formation, by the Aptian–Albian Yojoa Group limestones (Atima Formation, up to 1,400 m), by Cretaceous–Paleogene red beds and, across much of western and southern Honduras, by extensive Miocene ignimbrites. No petroleum system has been demonstrated and the USGS has not published resource volumes for the province.

Summary

An onshore frontier with no oil or gas production and no USGS-assessed resources, and Honduras has no hydrocarbon production. National interest has turned to the Caribbean offshore, outside the province: in August 2026 Talos Energy took operatorship of a block of more than 4 million gross acres off Gracias a Dios, closing a 45% interest with a further 35% awaiting Secretaría de Energía approval and CaribX retaining 20%. The first 3D seismic survey, in deep water, was scheduled for September–October 2026, with a shallow-water campaign planned for the second quarter of 2027, but no commercial discovery has been confirmed. Environmental and indigenous groups have challenged the 2013 contract over its terms and the lack of prior consultation.
